Music Enrichment

The Alum Rock Jazz Program provides students with musical enrichment throughout the year.  As studies continue to show, music helps in the development of the whole child, academically and socially.  With the help of supporters, over 100 Alum Rock students are able to enjoy these experiences every year.

Alum Rock Jazz Program

Young musicians in the Alum Rock Jazz Program are taught by first-class instuctors, many of whom are Alum Rock Jazz alumni. The musicians in the competitive Alum Rock Jazz Band rehearse nearly 10 hours a week between October and May.  They perform at school assemblies and other special events.  To reqest a performance, please contact Director Tim Spacek.

Alum Rock Summer Jazz Program

For more than 20 years, the Alum Rock Summer Jazz Program has hosted over 100 young musicians annually who show commitment and talent in their school bands.  The students from throughout the Alum Rock School District enjoy three weeks of free training with jazz instructors.  As a finale, the students perform jazz and big band tunes for their families.  The summer program usually runs in July.  For more details, students should inquire with their local band teacher.

San Jose Jazz Summer Jazz Camp

The Alum Rock Jazz Program and San Jose Jazz have a long standing partnership.  Every summer, Alum Rock Jazz students are encouraged to attend the San Jose Jazz Summer Jazz Camp, an exciting two week learning lab for middle and high school musicians with backgrounds that range from intermediate to pre- professional. Camp includes two weeks of daylong immersion into all aspects of jazz, from theory to performance. Each student is placed in a small ensemble and a big band with advanced students being placed in the Latin Jazz Big Band, Jazz Fusion Combo or the Summer Jazz Camp ‘A’ Band which focuses on the repertoire of historically important jazz composers.
